Getting Ready for Kindergarten
(Phonics and Storytelling)

This fun class emphasizes the word study continuum, which consists of nine categories of learning that students will develop over time. They are: early literacy concepts, phonological and phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, letter / sound relationships, spelling patterns, word structure, and word solving actions.

Reading Club – Grade 1

Reinforce the five fundamental components that each child needs to learn to be a successful reader: fluency, comprehension, phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary. The workshop will also emphasize the reading and writing connection that is vital to your child’s growth in the language arts.

Getting Ready for Second Grade

In this exciting class, we will work with students in both math and lan-guage arts. Students will work to strengthen application and processing skills necessary for success in second grade. In Language Arts, students will engage in guided reading and writing, all within a balanced literacy program. Second Grade Georgia Performance Standards will guide in-struction. Reading Success—Grades 3-4

These are important years in which your child expands reading skills and builds interest in, and love for, books. We will focus on different authors and illustrators in a variety of genres and help students gain a wide range of skills while increasing their confidence as readers. Pizza & drinks included.

Writing Can Be Fun!—Grades 3-4

Who says writing can’t be fun? In this 7-week workshop, young writers will produce six pieces of original creative writing, take photographs to illustrate their work, and bind it all into a lovely hardcover book of their own making. (And go back to school in the fall with a new zest for writing that teachers will be sure to notice!) The workshop culminates in an eve-ning poetry reading for family and friends to attend. Workshop is taught by UGA writing instructor. Pizza & drinks included.

Middle and High School Transition

Close the gap between elementary and middle school or middle school & high school through an intensive prep course in study skills and organization in the context of literature study and expository writing. An expert in educational transition will teach the courses.

Writing Team

Success as a student means being able to write a well-organized and detailed essay. This class will teach the six basic traits of excellent writing: voice, organization, sentence structure, fluency, grammar and punctuation, including critical thinking skills. A professional writing instructor will be leading these lessons. Pizza & drinks included.

Students will learn important reading strategies for success in middle school . We will teach strategies for both nonfiction and fiction. Students will learn how to make reading inferences, draw accurate conclusions and read with purpose.

Exploring Science

Students will love learning more about the world of science through inter-active classes on topics such as weather, electricity, marine life and ecol-ogy.…. UGA science instructors will work alongside your child to help him or her gain important skills in observation, data collection, and graph building. Tap into skills that may lead to a future in the field of science!
